What with all the oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico, I think it’s time that we get serious about alternative energy. Here in northwestern Michigan I hear a lot of talk about why one form or another won’t work; not enough sun for solar, not enough wind for turbines, we have to go with biomass because of its affordability. How about a combination? I know that no single approach will solve all of our problems, but we need to look at the long haul. Options? Repeated disasters with fossil fuel production, or the expense of alternatives that are truly viable and long-lasting.

My question is: Where is the hydrogen solution? And, let’s take a new and updated approach to nuclear production. Screw Big Oil. Screw the corporate hotshots who haven’t yet figured out how they can reap the profits of clear energy. The past couple of years’ revelations of their disregard for anything other than their own greed (and their stockholders are as guilty as they are with their “I want profits, NOW mentality) should make their opinions worthless. Even the fact that BP retains oversight of their own criminal behavior and the resultant cleanup, and continues to lie to us should convince us that we will be getting no viable help from the corporate quarter. Why won’t they just do what’s right? Are they that out of touch that they no longer know what’s right? If so, it’s time we see some photographs of their corporate head-jobs covered in the same Louisiana crude as the hapless creatures whose lives and environment they have destroyed forever.

Oops, I digress. Hydrogen; that’s what I was talking about. Expensive. Yes. Imperative. Yes. Create a development fund that will award anyone who comes up with the technology a billion dollars, make that technology public domain, and then retrofit everything to work in concert with the current technologies of solar and wind. (By the way, where have we been with the development of solar technology? It’s been decades, and we haven’t progressed much at all. Thanks to the Oil Companies for killing any ideas that would cut into their profits.) The race is on. There is no more time. Advancements in hydrogen and atomic energy sources must be our priority. Damn the expense. We have let the wrong advisors lead us down the path of their own profit for too long. Out of the way, you asses. Let’s get someone in the lead who has an interest in the long term and the good of the planet. The alternative is just too grim to contemplate.

Why aren’t those three yahoos who “testified?” before Congress, and repeatedly pointed fingers at each other without accepting any culpability now in court attempting to save their own skins? It doesn’t appear that they are doing much of anything else at the moment. And I think we know enough regarding their conceit and negligence to prosecute. So, let’s do it. If we wait until the cleanup is complete, they will be dead of old age.

Do they sleep well at night? If not, it’s probably because of thoughts of lost revenue, not because of remorse of the ruination they have visited upon our Planet. Their total immersion in the Corporate Mentality prevents them from understanding the gravity of the situation into which they have thrust us. As usual, as history has shown us over and over with the corporate harvesting of every other natural resource, their concern is with removing every single barrel of oil the Gulf has to offer, with no concern for the environmental consequences. We continue to follow the same ideology in our harvesting of the last Old Stand forests around the world; with the result that the landscape is irrevocably destroyed.

I’m angry. Most people with any brains are angry. Mr. President, we need you to get angry too. You are our mouthpiece, and we rely on you to get tough with those responsible and let them know we will not allow this to be swept under the carpet and forgotten. Or forgiven. Put these men in prison, where they belong, and perhaps the rest of the corporate scumbags will be sufficiently rocked as to help them see the light of responsibility and alter their policies of corner-cutting and deceit.

I know that President Obama is noted for his even-temperedness, but it is now time for him express our outrage and disgust. Eleven people died on that rig, and no amount of corporate excuses and backpedaling will alleviate the pain of their loss. BP’s negligence and attempted cover up should be rewarded with commensurate prison sentences. Followed by the rest of the Corporate trash that has driven this country to the brink of destruction. Americans are sickened by the lack of ethics exhibited by Corporate America. We have been repeatedly raped by these “pillars of American business,” and the time has come for them to take their lumps. They are nothing but crooks and assholes who happen to hold the money. Take the money away, put them behind bars and let them rot there. And, if the President doesn’t have the chutzpah to act for us, we must find the means to move for ourselves. Enough is enough.

Who cares? Is this the only woman doing this at this moment? I don’t think so. This is just another example of “news-make.” Slow days in the news business force networks to make news. I thought the interview answer of one man was spot on, “If she wants to leave her family for another man, it’s her business and nobody else’s.” Exactly.

Why make this frumpy, emotionally retarded bitch the focus of national attention. Are we that interested in her situation? Why must national news organizations play tabloid? Let those interested read about it in the checkout line.

Have you seen this woman? She’s obviously whacked. Look at her eyes; someone’s not home there. And, here boyfriend? Are we sure there’s not a warrant out for this guy? These are ordinary people who now share the spotlight with the President of the United States, International stories of earthquakes, volcanoes and the like. Drop the coverage. Nothing good can possibly come from this story, so why should we be subjected to her post-partum philandering? Who cares? Have a good life, and call us when you find a cure for cancer, or discover a way to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels.

Coverage like this is why we sip our morning coffee and roll our eyes heavenward as we contemplate what the world is coming to. And then change the channel in disgust. Only to find the same story on every morning news(?) channel. Stop it! Give us hard news, not fluff. Tell us something that will better our day, improve our understanding of our lives, or give us hope for the future. Get the camera out of her face and focus it on the guy down the block who has figured out a way to make fuel from his backyard compost heap.

Spare us your forced melodrama.

A paragraph from the book that speaks to the subject of a tryst. How succinctly he sets the tone of tawdry illicitness.

“Where do they see each other, where do they meet? Have they a room somewhere, a love nest? She pictures it, off a mean, cobbled street, up a dirty stairway at the end of a corridor smelling of cats. Lino on the floor, and the sagging bed shoved into a corner, two straight chairs and a stained table with and empty wine bottle and two glasses in the bottoms of which the purple lees of last week’s wine have gone dry and turned to crystal. A meagre window with a yellow net curtain and a view of back yards and crooked dustbins. Two cigarettes smouldering in a tin ashtray, one smeared with lipstick. A cistern drips, a voice in the street calls out something. In the corner, in the shadows, his pale flanks moving, her stifled cries.”

It is a testament to his wondrous prose that in a single paragraph he is able to create a world that contains all the elements of a forbidden affair. He is a genius; one of the greatest writers working in the world today.

“Of all the things we fashioned for them that they might be comforted, dawn is the one that works. When darkness sifts from the air like fine soft soot and light spreads slowly out of the east then all but the most wretched of mankind rally. It is a spectacle we immortals enjoy, this minor daily resurrection, often we will gather at the ramparts of the clouds and gaze down upon them, our little ones, as they bestir themselves to welcome the new day. What a silence falls upon us then, the sad silence of our envy. Many of them sleep on, of course, careless of our cousin Aurora’s charming matutinal trick, but there are always the insomniacs, the restless ill, the lovelorn tossing on their solitary beds, or just the early-risers, the busy ones, with their knee-bends and their cold showers and their fussy little cups of black ambrosia. Yes, all those who witness it greet the dawn with joy, more or less, except of course the condemned man, for whom the first light will be the last, on earth.”

From John Banville’s new novel: “The Infinities.” Read this book. His prose is incomparable. And he has psychological insight that is astounding.

I have been waiting for this book. His book, “Eclipse” is the story of an aging actor facing his deterioration, and is one of my favorites. His last book, “The Sea” was an award winner, and “The Book of Evidence” is a mind-blowing, first-person confession of a savage murder, while at the same time a look inside a soulless personality. Banville is the author of fifteen novels, and a master storyteller. He gets better with every book. Enjoy writing that is on a par with the finest in the world.

Invariably, they show a ragtag group of people applying paint to a wall in an indiscriminate and utterly random fashion. Painting is a craft; and as such there is a standard which should be followed. The one thing a viewer never sees on these programs is the quality of a finished paint job. Camera angles and lighting can mask the worst of it, and because, as we all know, “anyone can paint,” there is no emphasis placed on the final result. A quality paint job can make or break a room’s level of impression.

I have been a painting contractor for forty years, and I have had to constantly explain the difference between a “slap and dash” job and the importance of a quality product; from the choice of material to preparation to application. If a homeowner shows no concern, and price point is their main concern, I walk away. But, if they understand the benefit of a professional approach, “I’m the man for the job.”

Paint must be applied in a consistent way, to ensure the even spread of the material. Cutting in ceilings and corners is the first step. As one then rolls the material onto the surface, it is important that the product be worked from one corner to the next to ensure even coverage and to avoid roller marks, or “rope lines” that mar the finish and distract from the smooth appearance of a finished surface. It is a two-step process; fill your roller with paint, spread it out across the wall, from the cut line at the ceiling to the cut at the floor level, and then go back and “lay off” the paint by re-rolling, (from left to right, for example) across the length,(floor to ceiling) and width of the material on the wall. This ensures a consistent film of paint, and allows the applicator to see any heavy paint areas that need to be evened out. Overlapping of rolling, (even by half a roller width) should help to ensure consistency.

The appearance of correctly painted wall may not seem to be of utmost importance, but that is the point; a good paint job should enhance and support the other elements of a room. It shouldn’t make it’s own statement, but exist as the background against which other items can shine.

Next entry: Patching 101; “Aye, there’s the rub.”

1. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

2. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.

3. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

4. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

5. Was learning cursive really necessary?

6. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

7. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

8. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired.

9. Bad decisions make good stories.

10. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

11. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection…again.

12. I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

13. “Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this — ever.

14. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Damn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voicemail. What’d you do after I didn’t answer? Drop the phone and run away?

15. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

16. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

17. My 4-year old son asked me in the car the other day “Dad what would happen if you ran over a ninja?” How the hell do I respond to that?

18. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

19. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay.

20. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

in preparation for teaching the issues at Computer Training Connection on Hastings St. here in Traverse City. Classes should be coming up fairly quickly, and the sooner I can gain some insight, the sooner I have something to pass along. But, holy crap folks. This is dense stuff, here. And, putting all the pieces together to get the Big Picture is exhausting. After a while, your brain just doesn’t want to hear it any more. “Joey, let me digest for a moment. Kay? I’m toast. No kiddin’” But, once absorbed, I find it nearly impossible to shut it down. S’ok. I’m a big boy. I’ll handle it.
