The Time is NOW

What with all the oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico, I think it’s time that we get serious about alternative energy. Here in northwestern Michigan I hear a lot of talk about why one form or another won’t work; not enough sun for solar, not enough wind for turbines, we have to go with biomass because of its affordability. How about a combination? I know that no single approach will solve all of our problems, but we need to look at the long haul. Options? Repeated disasters with fossil fuel production, or the expense of alternatives that are truly viable and long-lasting.

My question is: Where is the hydrogen solution? And, let’s take a new and updated approach to nuclear production. Screw Big Oil. Screw the corporate hotshots who haven’t yet figured out how they can reap the profits of clear energy. The past couple of years’ revelations of their disregard for anything other than their own greed (and their stockholders are as guilty as they are with their “I want profits, NOW mentality) should make their opinions worthless. Even the fact that BP retains oversight of their own criminal behavior and the resultant cleanup, and continues to lie to us should convince us that we will be getting no viable help from the corporate quarter. Why won’t they just do what’s right? Are they that out of touch that they no longer know what’s right? If so, it’s time we see some photographs of their corporate head-jobs covered in the same Louisiana crude as the hapless creatures whose lives and environment they have destroyed forever.

Oops, I digress. Hydrogen; that’s what I was talking about. Expensive. Yes. Imperative. Yes. Create a development fund that will award anyone who comes up with the technology a billion dollars, make that technology public domain, and then retrofit everything to work in concert with the current technologies of solar and wind. (By the way, where have we been with the development of solar technology? It’s been decades, and we haven’t progressed much at all. Thanks to the Oil Companies for killing any ideas that would cut into their profits.) The race is on. There is no more time. Advancements in hydrogen and atomic energy sources must be our priority. Damn the expense. We have let the wrong advisors lead us down the path of their own profit for too long. Out of the way, you asses. Let’s get someone in the lead who has an interest in the long term and the good of the planet. The alternative is just too grim to contemplate.
